Owls Complete Sweep of Ranked Foes

The Rice women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep of teams in the Top 50 on Sunday, picking up their fourth win in a row with a 6-1 win over 36th ranked Princeton at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Rice took early control by grabbing the doubles point and maintained the pressure on the Tigers by taking four of six first sets of singles then seeing Priya Niezgoda, Savannah Durkin and Lindsey Hodge end the suspense with straight-set wins to provide the clinching points.
"We showed a lot of dedication and a lot of fight and commitment on the court today," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We did a really nice job of coming out and starting fast in doubles. Princeton came back on us some, but we stuck to our game plan and finished it off."
Niezgoda and Hodge each posted their fourth consecutive singles wins, with each of Hodge's last three coming over ranked opponents. Durkin improved to 9-5 in spring singles to take over the team lead in wins.
Rice will be back on the courts on April 3 when they host McNeese State at 5 p.m.
