RUSTON, La. -- Louisiana Tech jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as Rice dropped its Conference USA opener, 8-2, Friday night from J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

La Tech took the lead just two batters in. After a leadoff double, Dalton Skelton hit his second home run of the year to right field for an early 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added another in the third. With one out, the Bulldogs put together three straight hits, the last of which was a double down left field line that scored one.

Louisiana Tech added to their lead in the fourth. Mason Mallard led off with a home run. After Matt Canterino struck out the next batter, a walk and a single to center put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Parker Bates drove them in with a double to center field.

That was all that Louisiana Tech starter Matt Miller needed. After the third batter of the game reached on an infield hit, Miller, who came into the game with a 0.72 ERA, retired the next 11 Owls before Bradley Gneiting hit a one-out double in the fifth. Miller allowed just three hits in seven innings.

Ford Proctor finally got Rice on the board with a leadoff home run in the seventh, his second of the season. The Owls added a run in the ninth.

Rice falls to 9-11 on the season. Louisiana Tech improves to 13-6.

The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m. The second game is scheduled for 4 p.m. or 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game One.
