The Rice men's tennis team dropped a tight battle for the doubles and then saw hopes for an upset of 46th ranked Utah State foiled by the early retirement of the Owls top two players in singles as the Aggies took a 4-0 decision in San Diego on Friday.
After Utah State took the doubles set on court two, the Owls forced tiebreakers on the remaining two courts. Eric Rutledge and Ashton Duke had taken a 3-2 lead in the tiebreaker on court three, but the Aggies prevailed, 8-6 on court one to grab the lead.
In singles, Rice saw Mohamed Abdel-Aziz , Jacob Eskeland and Conrad Russell each extend their matches, but those efforts went for naught as the Aggies clinched the match with a win at six and the early exits of both Eric Rutledge and Sumit Sarkar on courts one and two.
The Owls will wrap up action in San Diego on Saturday when they face co-host San Diego State.
