Russell Caps Rally over Aztecs

Conrad Russell captured Rice's third tiebreaker set in singles to cap a spirited comeback by the Owls and cap their efforts at the San Diego Spring Classic by downing San Diego State 4-3 at the Northview Tennis Courts on Saturday.
Russell's 7-4 win over the Aztec's Joel Popov for the clinching point capped a rally that saw the Owls fall behind 3-0 after a loss in doubles and in singles on courts five and six. However, thanks to first set tiebreaker wins by Sumit Sarkar and Jacob Eskeland, as well as Mohamed Abdel-Aziz's quick win on court two, the Owls served notice they were not going to cede the final match of the weekend to their co-hosts.
Sarkar and Eskland each took their second sets in regulation and turned their focus on court four where Russell and Popov were engaged in a close battle before Russell emerged with the win to improve the Owls record to 6-11.
Rice returns home to the George R. Brown Tennis Center next week to host the 60th annual Texas Tamale Company Invitational, which opens round robin play between the Owls, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, VCU and Wichita State on Saturday.
