Memphis Tops Owls in Spring Break Classic Opener

The Rice men's tennis team opened play in the eighth annual San Diego Spring Classic on Thursday by dropping a 4-0 decision to 24th ranked Memphis at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego.
The Tigers grabbed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, then quickly extended the lead to 3-0 with wins on courts five and six, then clinched the match with a win on court two.
The Owls (5-10) will face No. 46 Utah State (9-7) in the first round of the consolation bracket at noon on Friday at the Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club. This will make the first time the Owls and Aggies have meet in men's tennis. USU dropped a 4-0 decision to host San Diego on Thursday.
In other opening matches, 37th ranked Texas Tech defeated No. 51 Arizona, 4-2 and No. 25 Harvard defeated San Diego State, 4-1.
