THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team continues Conference USA play with a pair of league matches this weekend. The Owls are on the road for a test at C-USA power North Texas (7-1-1) on Friday (Oct. 5). Start time in Denton, Texas, is set for 7 pm. (The Oct. 5 date is a change to the schedule from some earlier listings.) The Owls then return home to host conference foe Louisiana Tech (9-4-1) on Sunday (Oct. 7). The match vs. the Bulldogs is scheduled for at 1 pm at Holloway Field. Watch the matches online and get live stats at the above links.
QUICK ON THE 2018 OWLS (3-6-0, 1-2-0 C-USA): The 2018 Rice soccer team returns eight of 11 starters from last season's squad that went 12-4-2 and won the Conference USA regular season championship with a 9-0-1 league record. The Owls return a total of 19 letterwinners from a year ago and welcome in a talented new recruiting class.
SUNDAY'S SPECIAL PROMOTION – Help The Owls 'Kick Cancer': There's always a lot of activities and promotions for Owl fans at home soccer games. Sunday's game vs. Louisiana Tech has been designated as the Pink Game, presented by the United States Coast Guard. Fans can bid on the team's practice pink shirts in a silent auction in the plaza area. It's also Kids Club Day, so all Rice Kids Club members get in free. Fans can also enter to win a team signed soccer ball. Contact the Rice Athletics Ticket Office at 713-348-OWLS (6957), or at the above link, for more details.
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Nicky Adams, who is now in her eighth full year at the helm of the program. Adams enters the week with a career record of 83-52-22. A former pro player and All-America honoree while playing at Texas A&M, Adams was inducted into her alma mater's Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2015. She previews the upcoming match in the above video. Adams' coaching staff includes Brenton Saylor in his third year with the program, Kelly Madsen her first year, and volunteer coach Javier Jerez in his first season.
THE RICE-NORTH TEXAS SERIES: North Texas leads the all-time series with Rice 4-3-2. Last season in Denton, Texas, the teams finished in a 1-1 deadlock in double-overtime. The Mean Green have won both of the two meetings before the 2017 tie, defeating the Owls 2-1 at Holloway Field in 2016 and by the identical 2-1 score when the teams met in Denton in 2015. In 2014, the teams played to a tie at Holloway Field prior to the Blue & Gray claiming a 2-0 victory in the Championship Final of the C-USA Tournament held in Charlotte.
THE RICE-LA TECH SERIES: Rice leads the series with Louisiana Tech, 5-0-0. The Bulldogs are returning to Holloway Field for the second time in as many years after the Owls claimed a 2-0 home win in 2017. In 2014, Rice claimed a 6-0 victory at Holloway Field (which at the time was the fourth-highest scoring output in school history). Rice has won twice in Ruston, including the inaugural meeting in 2013 by a score of 3-0 and by a 4-0 margin in 2016. The Blue & Gray battled for a 1-0 victory over Tech in the semifinal round of the 2014 C-USA Tournament. After that narrow win over the Bulldogs in Charlotte, N.C., Rice went on to claim the league's postseason crown..
PREVIOUS OUTING: Birmingham, Ala. — The Rice soccer team held a 12-7 advantage in shots, and had some opportunities with four corner kicks in the first half, but UAB slipped away for a 1-0 Conference USA win over the Owls Sunday afternoon at Birmingham, Ala. Rice controlled the tempo in the first half, putting up five shots with a solid edge in set pieces. UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty made four first half saves to keep the Owls off the board. Both squads were on the offensive in the second half, combining for a total of 13 shots. In the 60th minute Megan Hudgens threaded a pass through traffic on the right side, where Kamilah Mustafa found the back of the Rice net for her sixth goal of the season.
DID YOU KNOW?: Heading into this weekend both Rice and North Texas have played the fewest number of games (9) among the C-USA members. The Owls and Mean Green have had cancelations and postponements that have limited each team's ability to play. By contrast, Louisiana Tech is one of more than a half-dozen teams in the country that head into the weekend having already played as many as 14 games.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: The league match at Charlotte (originally scheduled for Sept. 16 but postponed due to Hurricane Florence) will now take place at Charlotte on Oct. 28. Official start time for the rescheduled match will be announced later by Charlotte.
