Second weekly honor of season for junior
IRVING, Texas – Rice junior libero Lee Ann Cunningham was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday (10/15).
The Louisville, Ky. native helped the Owls (16-4, 7-0) extend their season-long win streak to 10 straight with a pair victories over the weekend. Cunningham totaled 40 digs over eight sets (5.0 per set) and registered her first double-double of the season in Friday's 3-2 comeback victory over Marshall.
In that match, Cunningham had 19 digs and a career-high 14 assists and followed up that performance with a match-high 21 digs in Rice's sweep over North Texas on Sunday. The 21 digs were the third-most by a C-USA player this season in three sets during conference action. Both Marshall (.184) and North Texas (.195) were held below a .200 hitting percentage, of which Cunningham played a major role.
Cunningham ranks fifth during C-USA play in digs per set (4.22) and is sixth in total digs (114). This marks the second C-USA weekly award for Cunningham this season.
The Owls will go for their 11th straight victory this Sunday, Oct. 21 when they host Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m. from Tudor Fieldhouse.
