PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Pitt scored on its first three possessions as Rice dropped its third straight game, 42-10, Saturday afternoon from Heinz Field.
The Owls were outgained, 479-to-277.
Rice won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. The Panthers began the game by driving 75 yards in seven plays, capped off by a 48-yard touchdown pass.
The Owls got nothing going in the first half, gaining just 60 yards while heading into halftime down 28-0.
But, Rice came out in the second half with a different look. The Owls took the opening kick and drove 69 yards in 12 plays, culminating in a Haden Tobola 23-yard field goal.
The defense twice forced Pitt to punt, and on the first play of its ensuing drive, Jackson Tyner hit Austin Walter for a 70-yard touchdown to pull the Owls within 28-10. But, Pitt scored on its next two drives to put the game away.
Tyner led Rice, going 13-of-27 for 201 yards and a touchdown. Walter added 162 all-purpose yards.
