Senior Alison Ho completed an unbeaten opening weekend to her final fall season by capturing the 2B singles title the Rice Fall Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Sunday.
Ho downed Alabama's Smith Hinton, 6-1, 7-5 to close out a weekend that saw her go 3-0 in both singles and doubles. She combined with Savannah Durkin to take the 2A doubles title on Saturday.
"We are proud of Alison for winning her singles flight, but more importantly, for the way that she fought, played, and competed," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "A really solid effort all the way around for her."
Ho was one of three Owls to advance to title matches in singles flights on Sunday, but both her teammates fell in three set matches.
Durkin dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision to Petra Granic of Texas in the 2A singles final, while Fernanda Astete fell to Danielle Spielmann of Alabama 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the 3A finale.
Overall, the Owls compiled a 14-7 mark in singles play and an 8-1 record in doubles in the opening action for the four-time defending C-USA Champions.
"This was a good weekend of matches for us," Schmidt said. "It was a nice opportunity for our team and staff to gauge what we are doing well and what our team can continue to work on. We are now looking forward to getting back on the practice court before a busy month of competition in October."
