COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Rice Owls women's cross country team won their second meet in as many tries this season by capturing first place at Saturday's 17-team, 6k race at the Texas A&M Invitational.
The Owls, who entered the meet ranked third in the latest USTFCCCA South Central Regional Rankings, totaled 70 points and held off the second place Baylor Bears (72 points) by placing three runners in the top 10.
Rice redshirt sophomore Abigail Cartwright was the team's leading finisher for a second straight meet, placing second overall in a time of 20:16. Seniors Katie Jensen (4th-20:22) and Cali Roper (7th-20:51) also placed in the top 10.
Freshman Khayla Patel earned 22 points in a time of 21:42 while Hannah Kay crossed the finish line in a time of 22:00. Also scoring for the Owls was Fabiola Andujar-Perez (52nd-22:31) and Anna Figueroa (55th-22:31).
"I'm so proud of our team," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "These are the days everyone realizes how important every place is. To win by two points shows every effort to hold your place or to pass someone is worth it. Our front three ran together for 4k and then Katie and Abigail moved up. I held Khayla back because it was her first 6k and she really moved the second half of the race, passing around 25 people. Hannah Kay did a great job of helping Khayla early on and then holding her place. Fabiola and Anna also ran their best 6k of their lives. I'm very proud of all of them."
Up next for the Owls is a trip to Lawrence, Kansas for the annual Rim Rock Classic on Saturday, Oct. 1.
