HOUSTON -- Junior Charlie Warren went 2-for-3 with three RBI to help rally the Rice baseball team to a 6-2 come-from-behind victory over previously unbeaten Dallas Baptist Tuesday evening at Reckling Park in Houston.
The Owls' second-straight win wasn't quite a breeze to secure, but definitely a whirlwind affair. Constant gusts of 20+ mph winds were an obstacle for both teams throughout the contest.
A Rice fielding miscue in the top of the first inning led to an unearned run. Dallas Baptist added another score in the fourth. A leadoff walk, a one-out double by Matt Duce and RBI grounder put the Patriots in front 2-0.
The Owls tied it in the fifth. After a one-out walk to Connor Teylk and single by Grayson Lewis, DBU then had trouble corralling a pitch that moved both runners into scoring position. Warren followed with a single up the middle to drive-in both runs for a new 2-2 game.
The Blue & Gray blew past the Patriot bullpen with three runs in the sixth. Ryan Chandler singled-home Ford Proctor with a bunt, and Ryan Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run. Chandler then scored on Warren's fielder's choice to make it 5-2. Proctor later doubled and scored in the seventh as the Owls stretched the margin to 6-2.
Rice had another sound and solid effort on the mound from three `new' pitchers who combined for 12 strikeouts. True freshman Jackson Parthasarathy scattered three hits over 4.2 innings in his first collegiate start while posting five Ks. Fellow freshman Evan Kravetz had a pair of strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless frames earning the win in relief. Right-hander Nick Orewiler, a junior who had been sidelined until this season, earned a save holding the Patriots in check for the final 3.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts of his own.
The Owls improved to 2-2 with the team's second-straight win. DBU dropped to 3-1.
Rice closes out its season-opening five-game homestand on Wednesday (Feb. 24). The Owls host longtime foe Texas State at 6 pm at Reckling Park. The Blue & Gray then head downtown to Minute Maid Park for three weekend games at the annual Shriner's Hospital for Children College Classic (Feb. 26-28).
