Wendy Zhang capped an unbeaten weekend by downing 15th ranked Saska Gavrilovska of Texas A&M to lead the Rice women's tennis team on the final day of action in the David Kent Invitational at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station on Sunday.
Zhang teamed with Priya Niezgoda and Fernanda Astete to split six matches with the host Aggies in the afternoon singles action to give the Owls a 14-5 record in three days of singles matches against A&M, Stephen F. Austin, TCU and Washington.
"As you can see from the score, there was a lot of high quality, hard-fought tennis played out there," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We grew stronger as a team this weekend and each player really seized the tournament as an opportunity to improve."
The Owls opened play by dropping two of three doubles matches against Washington to close out the weekend 5-4 in doubles play.
The Owls will wrap up the 2016 fall schedule next weekend when they travel to Baton Rouge to take part in the LSU Fall Invitational, November 11-13 at the LSU Tennis Complex.
