Rice head women's tennis coach Elizabeth Schmidt announced on Wednesday the Owls have signed Australian standout Michaela Haet to a National Letter of Intent to join the Owls for the 2017-18 season.
Haet, who is from Longueville, New South Wales, has risen into the top 40 of the Australian women's rankings this past year is currently ranked 39th and she played in the main draw of the 2016 Junior Australian Open in January. She reached a career-best ITF world junior ranking of 70 earlier this year. She captured four ITF junior singles titles in 2015: Victorian Junior Clay Court International ; South Pacific Open Junior Championships; Queensland Junior Winter International and the ITF Waikato-Bays Under 18s Championships.
"We are thrilled to have Michaela joining our program," Schmidt said. "While she has had success in both Australia and on the international level, it is exciting to see how she has continued to improve since we began recruiting her.
"Michaela is a fierce competitor, a very good athlete, and a great fit for our program. She is hard working on the court and in the classroom, has high character, and I am confident will be a total team player. We appreciate Mickie and her family putting their trust in us and are looking forward to her joining the team in August," Schmidt added.
The Owls open the 2017 dual season on January 21 when they host the Lamar Cardinals at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
