
Hodge Heads Owls' Advances at ITA Regional

Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang advanced the third round of singles while Hodge and Priya Niezgoda reached the quarterfinals in doubles to highlight Rice's efforts on Day Two of the 2016 ITA Texas Regional Championship Presented by Oracle in Waco on Friday.
Hodge eliminated the 10th seed Seda Arantekin of TCU 4-6; 6-4; 6-2 to move to the round of 16 on Saturday. Zhang, who is seeded fifth, moved on with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Theresa Van Zyl of Baylor.
Rice's three other singles entries in the winners bracket fell in the round of 32. Fernanda Astete dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 verdict to Baylor's Jessica Hinojosa Gomez, Alison Ho fell to ninth seed Neda Koprcina of Texas, 6-2, 7-5 and Niezgoda was defeated by Texas' Petra Granic, 6-3, 6-4.
Hodge and Niezgoda were the only of the Owls three doubles teams to advance to the quarterfinals, first upsetting fourth seeds, Saska Gavrilovska and Stefania Hristov of Texas A&M, 8-6 and then outlasting Alba Cortina Pou and Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech, 8-7 (9).
Play opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the doubles quarterfinals, followed by the round of 16 in singles at 11 a.m. at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center and Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University.
