TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Competing against some of the top teams in the nation, the Rice Owls women's cross country team placed 33rd out of 42 teams at Saturday's Pre-National Invitational hosted by Indiana State.
Senior Katie Jensen led the Owls with a 44th place finish of 20:57 in the 6k Blue race. Cali Roper (82nd-21:17), Khayla Patel (170th-21:57), Hannah Kay (238th-22:42), Anna Figueroa (244th-22:49) and Fabiola Andujar-Perez (264th-23:22) finished in that order behind Jensen.
Colorado (93 points), Oregon (154 points) and Michigan (179 points) finished in that order for the top three team finishes.
"Overall today was a rough day for the Owls," Rice women's cross country head coach Jim Bevan said. "We ran against a tough field and had some problems. Cali was stepped on at 1k and lost her shoe so she ran 5k with one bare foot. She still competed well and Katie did a good job for us, running with the second pack throughout most of the race. Khayla had a new PB and got her eyes opened with a race this large. Anna and Hannah helped each other and Anna had a PB as well. We were missing Abigail Cartwright and Elsa Racasan as they had a little ding and we need to protect them for conference. We should be 100 percent soon."
The Owls will now set their eyes on repeating as Conference USA champions with the title race two weeks away on Oct. 29 in Charlotte, N.C.
