COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice junior Cali Roper placed fourth and the Owls as a team finished sixth out of 16 teams at Saturday's Texas A&M Invitational.
Roper, who won her season debut at the Rice Invitational back on Sept. 11, finished Saturday's 6000 meter race in a time of 20:35.9 (5:31 pace).
In addition to Roper, the Owls got points from Katie Jensen (26th-21:25.6), Hannah Kay (51st-22:09.1), Ellen Diemert (54th-22:20.03), Kristin Sweeney (55th-22:20.06), Fabiola Andujar-Perez (22:27.0) and Molly Tilbrook (72nd-22:52.4).
"Cali ran a controlled race today, I held her back a little bit," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "We also ran without Elsa Racasan, who just raced at the World Junior Mountain Running Championships. This was the first 6000m race for eight of our girls and we also got Eleanor Wardleworth back racing for the first time in a year. Overall I feel good about our performance and it's exciting to see the team we could become over the next couple of weeks."
Texas (87 points) took home the team title Saturday, followed by Missouri (92 points), Abilene Christian (107 points), host Texas A&M (119 points) and Stephen F. Austin (135 points).
The Owls, who are ranked sixth in the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Rankings, will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Lawrence, Kansas to run in the Rim Rock Classic at 10 a.m.
