Moussa, Goodwine Lead Owls to Victory Over FIU

HOUSTON, Texas - The Rice Owls women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a convincing 80-59 victory over the FIU Panthers Thursday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (8-16, 3-10) was led in scoring by senior guard Reem Moussa, who scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting along with five assists, four steals and only one turnover in 30 minutes off the bench. Sophomore forward Jasmine Goodwine had her second-highest scoring output of the season with 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field, along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
In addition, senior post Christal Porter notched her seventh consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Owls outshot the Panthers (3-21, 0-13) 47-37 percent, forced 22 FIU turnovers that resulted in a 32-3 point differential and outscored FIU 40-22 in points in the paint. Of the 22 turnovers, Rice had 16 steals, the second-most all season.
"It feels good to get a win," Rice head coach Greg Williams said. "We were able to get a cushion in the first half by pushing the pace and forcing turnovers, which helped our transition game. Reem was fantastic; obviously, the best offensive game of her career and Jasmine had a great game as well."
Goodwine (15 points) and Moussa (12 points) combined to scored 27 first half points and Rice closed the opening 20 minutes on a staggering 30-6 run to take a 46-19 lead at halftime. The 46 points were a first half season-high, as was the Owls' 59 percent (19-of-32) shooting from the floor. The Owls limited FIU to just 30 percent shooting and forced 12 turnovers that led to 18 Rice points.
FIU actually outscored Rice 40-34 in the second half but the Owls never let the Panthers get closer than 59-44 with 9:27 remaining.
Rice will go for the Florida sweep on Saturday when they host Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse.
