GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Rice Owls women's cross country team sent seven runners to Friday's Southwestern University Invitational and came away with the team's second team title this season.
Rice (20 points) defeated St. Edwards (2nd-61 points), Southwestern (3rd-97 points), Concordia (4th-97 points) and Sul Ross (5th-106 points). Owls' redshirt freshman Abigail Cartwright won the 5000m race with a personal best time of 18:59.6, beating the next closest opponent by nearly 23 seconds.
Other Rice competitors in the 40-athlete race included redshirt freshman Anna Figueroa (3rd-19:51.2), senior Audrey Wassef (4th-19:57.6), junior Julia Sunderland (5th-20:01.17), redshirt freshman Lucrecia Aguilar (7th-20:14.3), senior Christina Wassef (8th-20:20.5) and junior Savannah Rohloff (9th-20:22.2).
"This was a great step up for Abigail as she has had to overcome some nagging injuries for a year and now we know she's back," Rice women's cross country head coach Jim Bevan said. "We also got a great effort from the rest of our young ladies as we needed this race to prepare the entire team for conference."
A majority of the rest of the Owls' squad will be competing at Saturday's Pre-National meet in Louisville, Kentucky.
