DENTON, Texas - The Rice Owls women's cross country team continued their early season surge with their second meet victory of the year, winning the Ken Garland Invitational 5K Saturday morning on the campus of North Texas.
The Owls group of seven runners, who finished with 35 points, had a combined time of 1:30.32, a full minute-plus ahead of second place SMU (1:31.55). Sophomore Cali Roper blew away the competition, winning her second individual title of the season with a time of 17:29 (avg. mile of 5:37).
Rice, who entered action on Saturday ranked seventh in the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Poll, also got top-10 finishes from sophomore Katie Jensen (2nd-17:46) and freshman Madison McLellan (4th-17:53). Both runners also finished in the top three in the Owls season opener at the Rice Invitational.
"We ran a very controlled race and were able to move up near the finish," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "We had just great performances all the way around. This was probably one of the best races we've ran since the 2010 or 2011 season. This group is very, very good and they work well together. I'm very proud of them."
Freshman Elsa Racasan just missed out on giving the Owls four top-10 finishers, placing 11th with a mark of 18:28. Sophomore Hannah Kay (20th-18:54), freshman Ellen Diemert (24th-19:01) and junior Christina Wassef (26th-19:11) finished in that order to round out the Rice seven.
Saturday's victory marked the first time the Owls started the season with back-to-back wins since they won the Rice Invitational and Islander Splash consecutively in 2011.
The Owls will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 4 when they travel to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Rim Rock Classic.
