HOUSTON - The Rice Owls collected 18 hits, including the team's second grand slam in four days, on the way to an 11-2 Conference USA victory over visiting Louisiana Tech in the opening of a three-game series Thursday evening at Reckling Park.
With the win Rice improved to 35-17 on the season and remained in first place in the C-USA standings with a 21-7 league record. The Owls are now only one game away from clinching a share of the conference regular season title. LA Tech is now 15-33 overall and 5-23 in C-USA.
The series, which is the last three games of the regular season, continues through Saturday. Start time for Friday's second game is set for 6:30 pm.
