HOUSTON, Texas - Rice senior middle blocker Jillian Humphrey became the 10th player in school history to earn a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches Association Southwest Region Team, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
"It's great to see yet another Rice player earn All-Region status," Rice head coach Genny Volpe said. "Jill deserves it after a great career at Rice and having her best season this year. I'm happy to see both her and Sara recognized for their accomplishments."
Humphrey, from Shoreacres, Texas, was twice named an AVCA Honorable Mention selection before being named to the team this season. The senior ranked second in C-USA, 34th in the nation, in hitting percentage (.375) and was third in the league in total blocks (141). She was named to the C-USA First-Team for the first time in her career thanks to a .437 hitting percentage in C-USA only matches and was the only player in the league to be named both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week in 2014.
Humphrey joins Sammy Waldron, Olaya Pazo, Natalie Bogan, Tracey Lam, Karyn Morgan, Meredith Schamun, Ashleigh McCord, Nancy Cole and Megan Murphy as Owls who've been named to the AVCA Southwest Region Team.
In addition to Humphrey, sophomore setter Sara Blasier was one of six student-athletes named an AVCA Southwest Region Honorable Mention. Blasier, from Hartford, Wisconsin, was selected to the C-USA Second-Team for a second straight season by leading the league in assists per set (11.07) and was third in total assists (75). Blasier helped orchestrate an offense that ranked seventh nationally in kills per set (14.4) and eighth in assists per set (13.5).
