Okafor Named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas - Rice freshman middle blocker Portia Okafor became the fifth different Owl to garner Conference USA Player of the Week honors this season after being selected the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, the league office announced.
Okafor, a native of Lewisville, Texas (Lewisville HS), helped guide the Owls to a 2-0 weekend by controlling the net with 11 total blocks and 15 kills. Okafor posted four blocks (2 solo) in the Owls 3-1 win at FIU, followed by a seven-block performance in Rice's 3-0 sweep at Florida Atlantic.
Okafor leads the Owls with 49 total blocks (1.14 per set) in league play, 11 of which are solo. Okafor also leads all of C-USA with a 1.15 blocks per set average throughout the entire season.
The award was the Owls sixth total C-USA Player of the Week Award and the fifth different Owl, joining Andi Bawcum, Sara Blasier, Jillian Humphrey and Katie Steel.
The Owls return to Tudor Fieldhouse this weekend for a pair of matches, beginning with North Texas on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by Louisiana Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.
