Owls Use Defense to Stuff Alcorn State

HOUSTON, Texas - The Rice Owls women's basketball team returned from the Thanksgiving holiday by applying a smothering defense against the Alcorn State Lady Braves en route to a 61-33 victory Friday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The 33 points allowed by the Owls (3-2) were the sixth fewest in a single-game in Rice history while the Lady Braves' (0-4) 20 percent shooting was tied for the fourth lowest by an opponent in school history.
Rice was led in scoring by sophomore forward Jasmine Goodwine, who registered her fourth double-digit game of the season with a game-high 15 points. Junior forward Megan Palmer snagged a season-high 13 rebounds, six on the offensive end, and played a big role in the Owls' 16-2 second-chance points differential.
Ten of the 11 Owls who entered the game scored points and Rice had a 28-17 advantage off the bench. The Owls scored 40 of their 61 points in the paint compared to just 18 from the Lady Braves. In addition to Goodwine, Rice got good performances off the bench from Alyssa Lang (9 points) and Wendy Knight (8 points), each of whom scored season-highs.
Alcorn was led in scoring by freshman Shaqueria Dubose, who scored 13 points on 6-of-19 shooting.
The Owls outplayed the Lady Braves in almost every aspect in the first half, taking a 24-7 lead to the locker room and matching a school record by holding Alcorn State to just seven first half points on nine percent (3-of-32) shooting. Rice previously allowed a record-setting seven points in a first half to San Jose State in an 83-37 victory back on Feb. 17, 2000.
Goodwine led all players with eight first half points while Porter led all players with seven rebounds. Rice shot just 33 percent (10-of-32) as a team in the first 20 minutes but outscored the Lady Braves 12-0 in second chance opportunities. The Owls also dominated points in the paint, outscoring Alcorn St., 18-4.
Rice separated themselves from the Lady Braves holding Alcorn St. without a field goal for nearly nine minutes in the first half.
The only thing preventing the Owls from breaking the school record for lowest points allowed in a game was a made three-pointer by Dubose at the 3:20 mark of the second half.
The Owls will next travel crosstown to face rival Houston on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
