TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Rice sophomore Cali Roper wrapped up a stellar cross country season by placing 47th at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course.
Roper ran the 6K race in a time of 20:51, besting 206 other runners of the 253 student-athlete field. Roper was the 11th different Owl to representing the Rice at the NCAA Championships and the first since Becky Wade in 2011. Roper's finish of 47th was the fifth-best finish of those 11 competitors.
"Cali was 175th at the mile and passed 128 runners through the rest of the race," Rice head women's cross country coach Jim Bevan said. "She was also in just 98th place at the 4K mark. I've never seen such a performance. She was spiked and jostled early on and had to come from way back. I'm very proud of her. I've never seen someone pass so many people. This will serve her well in the future."
The Willis, Texas native had qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships by placing fifth at the NCAA South Central Regionals. She was also the C-USA individual champion and won three other meets throughout the regular season.
The meet concludes the 2014 cross country season and the Owls will now set their sights on track and field, with the indoor season set to begin in January.
