HOUSTON, Texas - For a second straight year, the Rice Owls women's cross country team heads to Denton this weekend to partake in the 2014 C-USA Men's Cross Country Championships at the Eagle Point Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of North Texas.
The women's 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. with the awards ceremony set for 11 a.m. Admission is free to the public.
Rice, who finished ninth last season, has had a very solid 2014 season thus far and will enter Saturday's race ranked fifth in the most recent USTFCCCA South Central Regional rankings. The Owls received six votes on Sept. 30 in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll.
Aside from the Owls, six other teams enter the championship ranked in the top 15 of their respective regional polls: Middle Tennessee (8th-South Region), Southern Miss (12th-South Region), UAB (13th-South Region), North Texas (8th-South Central Region), UTSA (15th-South Central Region), Western Kentucky (14th-Southeast Region).
The Owls have won two C-USA team titles (2007, 2005) and have finished in the top three in seven of the nine seasons they've competed in the league.
Rice will be led by sophomore sensation Cali Roper, who burst onto the scene her freshman season by placing second at last year's C-USA Championships, earning First-Team All-C-USA and Freshman of the Meet honors. This season Roper picked off right where she finished in 2013, winning three individual meets and earning two C-USA Athlete of the Week awards.
The Owls have won four team-titles this season along with a 16th place finished at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals. Senior Katie Jensen and freshman Madi McLellan have joined Roper in the top three of races on two occasions this season.
Set to join Roper, Jensen and McLellan will be Elsa Racasan, Ellen Diemert, Hannah Kay, Allie Schaich, Eleanor Wardleworth and Audrey Wassef.
