Natalie Beazant raced to an impressive straight-set win over a nationally-ranked opponent, but the 21st Alabama women's tennis team proved too strong for the Owls, downing the 69th ranked Owls 6-1 in Tuscaloosa on Saturday afternoon.
"Natalie played a really solid match and did a great job battling through that tight first set," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "Her intensity and attitude from start to finish was excellent. Our team ran into a very good Alabama team today and we can take a lot from this match. Now we have to rebound and be ready to go again tomorrow against UAB.
Beazant extended her spring dual record to 8-0 with a straight set win over Bama's Mary Anne Macfarlane, the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year. Beazant outlasted McFarlane in a tough first set, 7-5 before racing to a 6-0 win in the second set to score the Owls only point on the day.
The Owls will look to gain a split of their weekend trip to Alabama when they open Conference USA dual action on Sunday with a match at UAB. Rice is currently 2-2 through the first four matches of six consecutive contests on the road. They will travel to College Station on Friday afternoon to take on Texas A&M at 1:30 to close out the stretch of matches away from home.
