Swimmers Finish Fourth At U.S.D. Relay Meet

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Rice swimmers finished fourth among a field of seven teams at the University of San Diego Relays Saturday afternoon in California. The Owls' top performances were a pair of third place finishes among ten different events at the relay-only meet.Rice compiled 168 points for fourth place. UCLA won the meet with 276 points, followed by Boise State (225 pts.) and San Jose State (211). The Blue & Gray finished ahead of Conference USA rival Tulane (132), meet host San Diego (121) and Colorado College (49).
The Owls found their stride in the 800-freestyle relay. A foursome of freshman Erin Flanigan, seniors Alison Godbe and Shelby Bottoms, and sophomore Chelsea Fong touched third among a field of 13 entries with a time of 7:42.28.
Rice was also third in the 4x100 individual medley (not the NCAA's standard 400-medley relay). Sophomores Michelle Gean and Lilly Marrow, along with veterans Bottoms and Fong recorded a time of 3:59.83 to place behind UCLA (3:57.80) and Boise State (3:57.83). Marrow joined freshmen Rachel Moody and Madison Livingston for a solid effort in the 3x100 breaststroke relay, placing fourth overall with a 3:24.89.
Including three dual meet wins at the San Diego State Invitational on Friday (Jan. 6), the Owl swimmers had a successful weekend of action in California. Rice will next compete at the annual Texas Grand Prix on Jan. 13-16 in Austin. The Blue & Gray swims at the University of Houston Quad Meet on Jan. 27-28.
