Four Owls Named Academic All-District; Two Advance to Academic All-America Ballot

HOUSTON – Four Rice swim and dive student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
Seniors Ella Dyson and Ava Hamblett, along with sophomores Ava Portello and Reese Cole, earned the honor. Both Cole and Portello were selected to advance to the Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced April 28.
Dyson, from Marlow, England, highlighted her season with standout performances at the CSCAA Open Water Championship, where she claimed her third individual title in the 5K. She was also named the NIC Female Athlete of the Year after three first-place finishes in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle. Dyson holds a 3.81 grade-point average and is double majoring in sports medicine and exercise physiology and business management.
Hamblett, from Orange, Connecticut, earned two medals at the conference championship, including a gold medal as part of the 800 freestyle relay. She carries a 3.67 GPA and is double majoring in sports medicine and exercise physiology and biosciences.
Portello, from Davis, California, won two individual conference championships in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle. She also competed in both events at the NCAA Championships and earned three American Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week honors. She has a 3.95 GPA and is double majoring in history and business management.
Cole, from League City, Texas, won conference titles in the 200 and 400 individual medley and competed in the 400 IM at the NCAA Championships. She holds a 4.00 GPA and is double majoring in sports medicine and exercise physiology and neuroscience.
CSC members will vote on the Academic All-America ballot, with honorees set to be announced April 28.
