Freshman Erin Flanigan has tallied steady races in her hometown this week while competing in the USA Swimming Austin Grand Prix, but Sunday was her best yet with a 16th-place prelim finish among a field of 74 competitors in the 200-meter butterfly.
The USA Swimming-sponsored meet features some of the top competitors from across the country. Flanigan, an Austin native from Bowie High School now in her first season of collegiate swimming with the Owls, finished 16th in the morning prelims with a long-course meters time of 2:19.17. The mark converts to a season-best 2:02.61 in short-course yards. It's a full half-second faster than her previous Rice best set at the U.H. Invitational last fall and one of the top four in Conference USA this season.
Fellow freshman Casey Clark led three Owls in the prelims of the 200-individual medley. Clark was 52nd overall in a field of 145 entrants with a long-course time of 2:25.64 (converts to a season-best 2:06.27 in SCY). Senior Shelby Bottoms was 68th with a 2:27.04 (2:07.48). Sophomore Michelle Gean swam a 2:41.74 (2:20.23 SCY). Gean also competed in the 100-backstroke and was 100th with a time of 1:09.89 (59.62 SCY).
The meet continues through Monday (Jan. 16). Live results for all events are available at the above link.
