Isamu Tachibana led the way as three of Rice's four singles entries advanced in straight sets in the winner's bracket of the Midland Collegiate Invitational at the Midland Racquet Club on Friday.
Tachibana defeated Nicolas Moreno of UT-Arlington (6-2, 6-4) to move on to the second round. He was joined by sophomore Philipp Seifert, who earned a first-round bye and then dispatched Texas A&M's Daniel Brown (6-3, 6-4) and freshman Justin To, who made a successful Rice debut with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chris Ho of Dartmouth.
To's fellow freshman, Leif Berger, fell to Joe Hattrup of SMU 6-2, 6-2 in his first collegiate match, but rebounded with a win in the opening round of the consolation draw.
Berger and Seifert teamed to win their opener match in doubles, 8-3 over Alexander Centenari and Cameron Ghorbani of Dartmouth, before falling to Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson of New Mexico, 8-2. To and Tachibana lost a 9-8 tie-breaker in their first-round doubles match to Hall Fess and Taj Harrison of Arkansas.
