Under refreshingly sunny skies and warmer temperatures, the Rice women's tennis team jumped out to a hot start and cruised by the Houston Cougars, 5-2 on the John E. Hoff Courts on the Houston campus on Saturday.
"It's always nice to get a win, but we definitely had a few mental lapses and let them in some matches today," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "However, good teams find a way to win no matter what and I am proud of our team for their effort today."
As has been the script for much of the early part of the season, the Owls grabbed the early lead thanks to a strong effort in doubles. Their No. 3 team of Jessica Jackson and Danny Trigo raced to an 8-1 win and then the No. 1 team of Ana Guzman and Rebekka Hänle clinched the point with an 8-5 win. Alex Rasch and Dominique Harmath closed out the sweep with an 8-6 win.
The Owls continued their early momentum as singles play opened, with Hänle and Harmath raising the margin to 3-0 with straight-set wins at the top two singles spots. Ana Guzman then clinched the match for the Owls with a straight-set win at No. 4, but Houston struck back with wins at No. 3 and No.6. Trigo was extended to a third set, but closed the match out with a victory to give the Owls their final margin of victory.
The Owls will be back on their home court for the first time since January 18 when they host LSU at 1 pm on Tuesday. That match had originally been scheduled for Monday, but was moved back one day to accommodate the Tigers, who schedule had been backed up because of weather-related cancelations.
