Owls Chill Tigers' Challenge

Freshman Kim Anicete battled back to win the last three games against her former high school teammate to clinch a hard-fought 4-3 win over #75 LSU at a cold and windy Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the Rice campus on Tuesday.
Anicete and LSU's Ariel Morton, who were teammates at Klein High School last year, faced off at the No. 6 singles spot. Anicete grabbed the first set, 6-1, but Morton battled back to lead the second 5-4, just as teammate Whitney Wolf had closed the team score to 3-2 with a win over Rice's Rebekka Hänle at No. 1 singles. But Anicete regained her momentum to win the last three games and clinch both her individual match and the day for the Owls.
"It was nice to see Kim clinch the team victory for us," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "She and Ariel went to high school together so we knew that there would be a lot of emotions involved in that match and we are very proud of her effort today."
As they have done in five of the first six matches this year, the Owls started fast, sweeping all three doubles matches to grab the first point of the day. "Once again, we came out playing very solid in doubles and put LSU on their heels from the start," Schmidt noted. "I think that made a huge difference in this match today."
The Owls will be back on the Jake Hess courts on Sunday when they host Texas State and Texas Pan American in a pair of matches.
