Owls Beat TU 61-53

Tulsa - Tulsa - Jessica Kuster posted another double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds (both game-highs) to lead the Rice Owls to a 61-53 road victory at Tulsa inside the Reynolds Center. For Kuster, it was her team-leading fifth double-double of the season. The Owls improve to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA as they picked up their fifth road victory of the season. TU, on the other hand, drops to 4-6 overall and is now 0-2 in C-USA action.
Rice started the ball game by making five of its first eight fields, and after Goswitz's two made free throws, the Owls were up 17-11 (11:05). But, TU countered with 13 unanswered points to take a 24-17 lead at 5:34.
By the way, TU's comeback came when Kuster went to the bench (10:24) with her second foul after scoring four points, blocking three shots, and grabbing 7 rebounds in the first 9:36 of the game.
The Owls ended the half by outscoring TU 13-4 in the final five minutes for a 30-28 half-time lead. Opal Taskila and Hypolite each scored six points and Mayse added bucker for Rice in the 13-4 run.
Rice shot 43 percent from the field to Tulsa's 39 percent in the first-half as the Owls outrebounded the Golden Hurricane 21 to 16.
The two squads traded baskets, but TU outscored Rice 12 to 10 to start the second-half to knot the game at 40 apiece with 11:06 to play. Earlier in the half at 18:48 Rice's D'Frantz Smart received a body check as she was driving baseline and was subbed out to receive treatment on her left hip and did not. Amenemope McKinney performed admirably in her place.
The Owls put it together late when they snapped the 40-40 tie by going on a 13-4 run for a 53-44 lead. At the four-minute media timeout at 3:02 the Owls were up by eight (55-47). The Owls made six free throws in the final three minutes and played solid defense to limit Tulsa to only four points offensively for the win.
Also in double-digit scoring for Rice were Brianna Hypolite with 15 points on 6-10 shooting and eight rebounds and Morgan Mayse tallied 14 points (6-11 from the field) with 9 boards. Guard Jessica Goswitz had eight rebounds as well to go with 7 points.
TU was led by Loren McDaniel's 13 points and nine rebounds, while Denise Lewis contributed 12 points and rebounds.
