The 29th ranked Rice Owls fell short in their quest to advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships as the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns blanked the Owls, 4-0 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin on Sunday.
The Horns used their nationally-ranked doubles lineup to race out to the first point of the match. Kellen Damico and David Holiner, who are ranked 25th in the nation, downed Oscar Podlewski and Harry Fowler, 8-5. Fifth-ranked Ed Corrie and Jean Andersen then clinched the point with an 8-3 win over Michael Nuesslein and Christian Saravia at No. 1.
Texas nailed down a trip to Seattle in two weeks by racing out to straight set wins at No. 6, No. 4 and No. 3. Rice sophomore Harry Fowler held a 4-2 lead in the third set at No. 1 when the match was called, while Oscar Podlewski had just evened his match at No. 5 at one set each. Peter Frank was trailing 4-3 and down a set at No. 2.
The Owls will be back on the road next weekend, with a swing through Louisiana to face Tulane on Friday and LSU on Sunday.
