Minneapolis - The Rice Owls women's cross country squad placed 12th overall out of 29 teams at Minnesota's 29th Annual Roy Griak Invitational (5k) held at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Owls scored 272 points, and were led by senior Britany Williams' 32nd place finish (21:51).
"We ran in a tough field and came up a bit short and I thought our ladies competed well and they learned a lot and gained some valuable experience," stated Rice head Jim Bevan. "This meet is the best way to prepare our troops for the future challenges coming up this season. We were only twelve points and a few seconds from Penn State and ninth place overall. This is a tough course, nothing like we see in Texas, but it will help us later in the year.
"Britany (Williams) led us and Nicole (Mericle) and Halsey (Fowler) continue to improve. In fact this was Halsey's best race as an Owl and the same can be said for Marie Thompson. Meredith Gamble made a great debut, moving up from 120th place at 3k to finish 78th and be our fifth runner."
North Carolina State freshman Laura Hoer held off Minnesota junior Stephanie Price to win the individual title in the Jack Johnson Women's Gold (Division I) Race at the 25th Annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday.
Arizona won the team title with 76 points, while New Mexico was second (102 points), and Iowa State placed third with 113 points.
