- Rice dropped a 30-13 decision to Northwestern in the Owls' Rice Stadium opener. With the loss, Rice fell to 1-2 heading into next week's game against Baylor. Northwestern improved to 3-0. The Wildcats play host to Central Michigan next week.
- Rice game captains for the Northwestern game were Travis Bradshaw, Willie Garley, Scott Mitchell and Tyler Smith. Rice won the toss and elected to deferred to the second half.
- Rice utilized the same defensive starters for the third straight game.
- Defensive end Kramer Lucio's first-quarter sack was his second in as many games, setting a new season high. He had 1.5 quarterback sacks last season. Lucio had five tackles on the night.
- The Owls had a season-high three quarterback sacks in the game - one each by Lucio, Gaines and Cameron Nwosu.
- Defensive backs Corey Frazier and Phillip Gaines both set new game-high standards for tackles. Frazier had 10 tackles (5 solos, 5 assists). Gaines had nine tackles including a quarterback sack in which he forced a fumble.
- The Owls had a season-high three quarterback sacks in the game - one each by Lucio, Gaines and Cameron Nwosu.
- Linebacker Justin Allen, a transfer from Idaho, finished with an early season-high eight tackles including a tackle for lost yards.
- Tight end Luke Willson's five catches for 37 yards set a new career reception high for the third straight game. He leads the Owls with 12 tackles for 145 yards.
- Running back Sam McGuffie, who had four receptions last week against North Texas, had a season-high seven catches Saturday for 48 yards.
- Wide receiver Donte Moore's four catches for 66 yards established a new career high.
- Alex Francis had his first career kickoff returns with three for 66 yards including a long of 24.
- Place kicker Chris Boswell had two more field goals - 31 and 24 yards. The rookie has now made 7-of-10 field goals this season.
- Rice punter Kyle Martens, who is on the Ray Guy Watch List, averaged 50 yards on six punts.
