
Owls Advance at Fall Opener

MIDLAND - Rice University freshman Peter Frank began his collegiate career with a victory and returning junior Michael Nuesslein also advanced to the Round of 16 at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational here on Friday.
Frank defeated Abilene Christian's Bryan Jointer 6-0, 7-5 and will next face New Mexico's Carl Ho.
Nuesslein advanced with a 6-7, 7-6, (10-6) win over Grant Ive from Conference USA rival Tulsa. Nuesslein, the tournament's No. 4 seed, will next face Texas' Daniel Whitehead on Saturday.
In first-round action Friday, Rice newcomer Harry Fowler defeated New Mexico's Mads Hegelund 6-2, 6-4. Fowler went on to challenge the tournament's No. 1 seed in the Round of 32. San Diego's Dean Jackson was able to scratch out a 6-3, 4-6, (10-8) win over the upset-minded Fowler, a transfer player who last competed at Ole Miss.
Singles and doubles play continues at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational through Sunday in Midland.
