As a standout on Lake Travis High School's three consecutive state championship teams, Andy Erickson demonstrated a game-breaking flair. On Tuesday night in the Alamodome, the Rice freshman made a resounding statement that his game-breaking ways have lost none of their flair, leading the South to a 36-23 win over the North in San Antonio.
Erickson scored three touchdowns and added an interception for good measure to be named the game's offensive MVP.
After spending the past six weeks adjusting the rigors of college lift, Erickson and three of his fellow Rice freshman football signees (Gabe Baker, who joined Erickson on the South; Bryce Callahan and Drew Carroll on the North) took a break from conditioning and class work to pull on the pads. From the start, Erickson was obviously happy to be back in the environment.
With the South trailing 7-2 just before halftime, he returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown. After the North came back to take a 14-9 lead, he zipped through the North kick coverage on the ensuing kickoff for a 97-yard touchdown. He later caught a 19-yard scoring pass and then intercepted a fourth down pass after the North decided it was better to attempt the conversion than risking a punt to him. Erickson's teammate also made their presence felt during the game. Callahan intercepted a pass for the North in the first half while Baker delivered several crushing tackles.
All four players will rejoin their Owl teammates on campus this week to complete summer activities. The squad will reconvene on August 6 and then conduct their first practice on August 7 in advance of opening the 2010 season when they host Texas at Reliant Stadium on September 4.
