OMAHA, Neb. - Rice sophomore Anthony Rendon was named the 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Sporting Goods Division I Player of the Year and a First Team All-America selection, the ABCA announced from the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
In selecting its annual Player of the Year honoree, the ABCA considers both offensive and defensive performance as well as value to the team. This season Rendon batted .394 while leading Conference USA in home runs (26). He was among the nation's leaders in runs scored (83) and walks (65), and drove-in 85 runs in Rice's 63 games. Rendon maintained an .801 slugging percentage, a .530 on-base percentage, and finished with more home runs (26) than strikeouts (22). Defensively he had a .973 fielding percentage at third base and started a total of 16 double-plays for the Owls.
The Houston native was recently named a national finalist for the prestigious Howser Award and he was selected as the college player of the year by Baseball America magazine. Rendon is just the second player in C-USA history to be named the league's player of the year in back-to-back seasons. He picked up that honor again in 2010 after leading the Owls to the regular season league championship and the school's 16th-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. The two-time first team All-C-USA selection was named to the 2010 C-USA Championship All-Tournament team and the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Austin Regional.
Rendon joins an impressive list of honorees who have been named the ABCA/Rawlings Division I Player of the Year. The ABCA's previous winners include Mark Prior (Southern California, 2001), Khalil Greene (Clemson, 2002), Rickie Weeks (Southern, 2003), Jered Weaver (Long Beach State, 2004), Alex Gordon (Nebraska, 2005), Brad Lincoln (Houston, 2006), David Price (Vanderbilt), Buster Posey (Florida State, 2008) and Mike Leake (Arizona State, 2009).
The ABCA All-America teams are collegiate baseball's oldest selections, dating back to 1949. All Division I coaches have the opportunity to nominate and vote on these selections, which are initially compiled into eight All-Region teams. These teams are then finalized as the first, second and third All-America teams by the ABCA's NCAA Division I All-America/Coach of the Year Committee. This year Rendon headlined the committee's 64 ABCA All-American selections.
