Bruno Rosa saw his pursuit for a third consecutive All American ranking end in the first round as Virginia's 14th ranked Sanam Singh took a straight set win in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship in Athens, Georgia.
Singh, an NCAA semifinalist in singles in 2009, started fast, winning the last five games to take the first set 6-1. He kept the pressure on in the second set, moving out to a 3-1 lead in the second before Rosa staged a rally.
The senior from Florianopolis, Brazil, currently ranked 27th in the ITA rankings, held serve twice and then broke Singh for the first time to knot the second set 4-4. But Singh quelled any thoughts that Rosa might have had about launching another of his patented rallies, immediately returning the break of Rosa and then held serve to take the second set 6-4.
Rosa was attempting to become the first Owl to earn All America status in three consecutive years since Mike Estep and Zan Guerry from 1969-71. Guerry will be inducted into the ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame later on Wednesday night in Athens.
