Rice Races Past Louisiana-Lafayette

The Rice Owls tuned up for their weekend showdown with SMU in Dallas by taking a 6-1 decision over Louisiana-Lafayette at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Tuesday.
"This was a very solid effort by our team," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "We did not have a lot of rest between our VCU match and this match, so I was very pleased with how our team came out with a lot of energy and took care of business against a much improved ULL team. We are now looking forward to our match with C-USA rival SMU on Saturday."
The Owls, who moved up to 42nd in the latest ITA rankings released earlier on Tuesday, race out to a quick lead by taking the doubles point by winning two of three matches, and then took the first five singles matches in straight sets to reach their final point total.
With the win, Rice (11-7) matched its regular season win total from 2009. They will meet 29th ranked SMU at Turpin Tennis Center in Dallas at noon. They will take on North Texas in Denton on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Owls next home match will be April 17 when they host UAB at noon at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
