The Rice Owls opened a weekend swing to northern Texas by falling to 29th ranked SMU 6-1 on Saturday at the Turpin Tennis Center on the SMU Campus.
"SMU played better than us today. We were on our heels early in points and did not do a good job countering their aggression," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said.
The Mustangs celebrated Senior Day by sweeping the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, then clinched the match with straight set wins at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles. Freshman Daniella Trigo notched the Owls point with a three-set win at No. 6. Rice's Rebekka Hänle extended her match against 34th ranked Marta Lesniak to three sets before losing 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9).
The Owls will wrap up their weekend swing with an 11 a.m. match on Sunday against North Texas in Denton.
"We are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow against North Texas and showing the competitive spirit that this Rice team is known for," Schmidt said.
