Rice University's cross country teams have been honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as an All-Academic team for the 2009 season.
The women's cross country team, under head coach Jim Bevan, posted a 3.53 grade point average. Other Conference USA schools honored include Tulsa (3.51), SMU (3.41), UAB (3.29), and East Carolina (3.08). Villanova University's women's cross country team is the 2009 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country Scholar Team of the Year.
Head coach Jon Warren's men's cross country team earned a team GPA of 3.32 after posting a third-place finish at the Conference USA Championships and finishing 10th at the South Central Regional, while Tulsa tabulated a team GPA of 3.45. The Golden Hurricane finished second to UTEP at the C-USA Championships and ranked 7th at the Midwest Regional. Oklahoma State received the honor of being named the 2009 Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team of the Year after winning the NCAA Championships.
The Scholar Team of the Year distinction goes to the program that earned All-Academic Team honors and placed the highest among the field at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship and also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.
