IRVING - Rice University freshman forward Arsalan Kazemi has been named Conference USA's Rookie of the Week. The recognition comes after a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double in the Owls' road win at East Carolina on Saturday.
Kazemi registered his fifth double-double of the season as Rice snapped a seven-game losing streak and won on the road for the first time this season. Kazemi equaled his career high with 14 rebounds. Four of his five offensive rebounds led to Rice, second-chance points.
Kazemi was 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free throw line against East Carolina. He also had two blocks and a steal in 33 minutes of playing time.
For the year, Kazemi is now averaging 10.6 points and 8.6 rebounds. He is averaging a double-double against conference opponents at 11.3 points and 10.3 rebounds.
Rice begins a three-game home stand Wednesday night against Tulane. The Owls will also play host to UAB on Saturday before taking on Texas A&M International the following Monday in Tudor Fieldhouse.
