Owls Begin Play at UT Men's Invitational

Rice University's Jonathan Chang defeated Lamar's Marton Horvath as the Owls opened play at the UT Men's Invitational Friday in Austin.
Chang, competing in the main singles draw, also teamed with Sam Garforth-Bles for an 8-3 win over Texas A&M's Calon Alpar and Kayvon Karimi in the doubles draw. Chang and Garforth-Bles will take on the top doubles seed of Kellen Damico and David Holiner from Texas on Saturday morning.
Later in the day in singles play, Chang dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to No. 7 seed Peerakit Siributwong of Oklahoma in the Round of 16. Chang was the lone Rice player to win an opening-round, singles match. Three other Rice players lost their opening matches but have come back to post victories in the consolation draw.
Garforth-Bles opened with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to No. 3 seed Bob Van Overbeek of Florida before beating Texas A&M's Alburto Bautista 6-4, 6-4. Garforth-Bless will face Florida's Billy Ferhofer on Saturday.
After a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Texas' Vasko Miadenov in opening-round play, Phillipp Seifert defeated No. 6 seed Roberto Maytin of Baylor 6-7, 6-3, 6-1. Seifert will now face the tournament's No. 1 seed, Christian Blocker of Miami, who also suffered an opening-round loss.
In the B Draw, Andy Wang came back from a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Texas' Chris Camillone to defeat Texas-San Antonio's Kolby Kilgo 6-4, 6-0.
Tournament play resumes Saturday morning and runs through Sunday in Austin.
