Owls Have Five Advance at ITA South Central Regionals

ITA South Central Regional Day 1 Results
Rice University freshman Philipp Seifert won a pair of straight-set matches as the Owls advanced five to the Round of 32 at the ITA South Central Regional which began Saturday in College Station. Rice also went 3-3 in doubles play on Saturday with one of four teams advancing to the Round of 16.
Seifert defeated Texas A&M's Niall Angus 6-4, 6-0 before knocking off Texas' David Holiner 6-4, 6-4. Seifert will take on the tournament's top seed, Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek Sunday morning.
Christian Saravia also won two matches on Saturday in advancing.
Saravia opened play with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Texas-Pan American's Matt Teivans before knocking off Texas' Kellen Damico 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on Saturday. He will face Texas Tech's Vitor Manzini Sunday morning.
Also advancing after first-round byes and Round of 64 victories on Saturday were No. 7 seed Michael Nusslein, Harry Fowler and Peter Frank.
Nusslein defeated SMU's Joe Hattru 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 to advance. Fowler beat Texas A&M's Kayvon T. Karimi 7-6, 6-4. Frank posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over A&M's Daniel Brown.
In action on Sunday, Nusslein will take on Texas' Vasil Mladenov, who is seeded No. 17 at the tournament. Fowler plays No. 15 seed Colin Hoover of Texas A&M while Frank takes on No. 2 seed Ed Corrie of Texas.
Rice had four other players in singles action on Saturday.
Andy Wang defeated defeated Prairie View A&M's Kirsten Powell 6-4, 6-4 before dropping a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision to Texas A&M's Alexis Klegou in the Round of 64.
Sam Garforth-Bles defeated Texas-Pan American's Ricardo Hopker 6-1, 6-1.In second-round play, Garforth-Bles dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to TCU's Emmanuel Brighiu
Oscar Podlewski beat Texas A&M's Beau Blackshear 6-2, 6-2 before losing to No. 5 seed John Peers from Baylor 6-2, 6-4
Also in opening round action, Jonathan Chang suffered a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 loss to Texas Tech's Manzini. He will play UTPA's Teivans Sunday morning in the consolation draw.
In doubles play Saturday, Nusslein and Saravia advanced to the Round of 16 with an 8-5 win over Texas Tech's David Gonzalez and Raphael Pfister. Nusslein and Saravia, the No. 8 doubles seed, will take on No. 9 seeds Chris Camillone and Daniel Whitehead of Texas Sunday afternoon.
Rice had three other doubles teams advance to the second round of doubles play before losing in the Round of 32.
Two more rounds of both singles and doubles play are expected to be played Sunday when the tournament resumes.
