Rice punter Kyle Martens has been named by Sports Illustrated.com to its midseason All America first team, and he joins his deep snapper, Brandon Long, in being named by Phil Steele to his midseason All American fourth team.
This is the second, first team midseason honor that Martens has picked up this week. He was also named to the CollegeFootballNews.com first team. He was named the C-USA Specialty Teams Player of the Week after averaging 49.8 yards per punt on four kicks in the Owls 34-31 win over Houston last Saturday. One the season, he leads C-USA and ranks second in the country with a 47.92 average on 36 punts. He has placed 39% of his punts inside the 20 this year (14/36) and 50% of those have been downed inside the 10 (7/14).
Long is in his fourth year of serving as the Owls deep snapper. He has completed 465 long snaps in his four seasons (228 punts, 164 extra points, 53 field goals) and has also been credited with five career tackles on punt coverage.
