Martens Picks Up Pair of Honors

Rice junior punter Kyle Martens was named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Owls' 34-31 Homecoming win over Houston on Saturday. At the same time, Martens has been named by Collegefootballnews.com to its midseason All America team as the first team punter.
Martens averaged 49.8 yards per punt on four kicks vs. the Cougars and did not allow any return yardage. One the season, he leads C-USA and ranks second in the country with a 47.92 average on 36 punts. He has placed 39% of his punts inside the 20 this year (14/36) and 50% of those have been downed inside the 10 (7/14). His previous career best was for punts inside the 20 was 14 in 2008 (52 punts).
In addition, four of his 14 punts inside the 20 have led to Rice scores on the following possession after the Owls defense held (three touchdowns, one field goal). He was recognized for the third time this year by the College Football Performance Awards for his punting, after averaging 49.8 on four kicks vs. Houston while not allowing any return yardage.
