- PK Clark Fangmeier's 45-yard field goal with 10:27 to play in the second quarter was the senior's 23rd of his career. The boot moved him past Brennan Landry (2002-05) and into fifth on Rice's career field goal list. The second-quarter field goal was a yard shy of a career-high 46-yarder during his freshman season (2006).
- TE Vance McDonald gave Rice a late, second-quarter first down with a 13-yard reception. It was McDonald's first career reception.
- WR Toren Dixon extended his streak of games with at least one reception to 28 with a nine-yard reception on the Owls' first possession of the second half. Through Saturday, Dixon is tied for seventh on the NCAA active chart for consecutive games with a reception. The play was Dixon's lone reception on the day.
- WR Patrick Randolph caught five passes for 50 yards, both career highs. He had three receptions in five games and his previous yardage high was 41 yards on two occasions during the 2008 season.
- DB Xavier Webb had four tackles against Texas Tech, setting a new career high. Webb did not have more than one tackle in any game during his freshman season. He opened the 2009 season with two stops in last week's opener against UAB.
- QB John Thomas Shepherd's 14 completions and 109 passing yards established new career highs for the senior. Last week against UAB, Shepherd was 10-of-22 for 81 yards. Shepherd tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to WR Taylor Dupree with 11:02 to play in the game, his first career TD pass.
- Dupree's fourth-quarter touchdown reception was his first career touchdown catch.
- Rice utilized three different quarterbacks in the game. In addition to Fanuzzi and Shepherd, freshman Ryan Lewis saw action in the fourth quarter, his first playing time of his career. Lewis completed his third pass attempt, a 14-yarder to McDonald for a first down.
- Lewis became the latest in a long list of two-sport athletes at Rice. The Baton Rouge native saw action in 22 games for the Owl baseball team following spring football practices. Lewis completed 7-of-15 passes for 66 yards.
- Rice has now not been shutout in its last 100 games.
