Rice University golfer Michael Buttacavoli has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday.
Buttacavoli was one of 108 Division I golfers to be recognized by the GCAA.
This spring, Buttacavoli was one of three Rice University student-athletes to receive the Conference USA Commissioner's Medal for a third straight year. The academic honor recognizes student-athletes who achieve better than a 3.75 grade point average.
Buttacavoli's junior season was cut short by a knee injury after he capped the 2008 fall season with a second-place finish at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. For the year, Buttacavoli led the Owls with a 73.64 stroke average after leading the team with a 74.08 average during the 2007-08 season.
Rice University has had 18 student-athletes receive the GCAA All-America Scholar award a total of 29 times since its establishment in 1984. Buttacavoli's brother, Frank, received the recognition as a Rice senior in 2005.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championship.
